Functional anatomy,
surgical access and wound closure of the upper extremity

November 8, 2019 08:30 - 16:30Meibergdreef 9, 1105 Amsterdam-Zuidoost

The responsibilities of the Physician assistants have greatly expanded in recent decades and there is an increasing need to develop surgical skills. We offer high quality dissection courses to help you develop these skills.

In the fall of 2019, the first dissection course for physician assistants will take place at the anatomy department of the University of Amsterdam. The focus of this course will be the upper extremity, covering basic topographic and functional anatomy and relevant surgical approaches, the no go zones, important landmarks and various suture techniques will be discussed and practiced.
In addition to anatomical demonstrations, live dissections are performed by our anatomists, this will allow the student to develop an excellent three-dimensional impression of the anatomy of the upper extremity.

With the use of anatomical prosections and surgical demonstrations, you will get a chance to improve your anatomical knowledge. The final part of the course will address wound closure and various suture techniques will be demonstrated, followed by the opportunity for all participants to practice their suture skills (all material necessary for the suture technique training are provided Johnson & Johnson).

TARGET AUDIENCE

Physician assistants in training or just completed their training as a physician assistant.

After the course, the participants will of obtained new insight and knowledge in:

  • Topographical Anatomy of the upper extremity-Osteology/myology arthrology/peripheral neuroanatomy/vascularization
  • Peroperatieve soft tissue management functional anatomy of the upper extremity
  • biomechanical models /MSK Pathology

After the course, participants will be able to:

  • Determine anatomical landmarks of the upper extremity
  • Identify important neurovascular regions “No go zones”
  • Determine and draw incision locations
